Carte blanche to Raymond Depardon
There are no limits to wandering! Especially when it's a chance to meet up, as was the case a few months ago between Raymond Depardon and the Pont du Gard. It was an encounter that prompted one of the greatest names in world photography to spend several days setting up his Ries wooden tripod and his Folding bellows camera on the sometimes steep terrain of the Gard site, to extract a strong point of view from a place he considers ‘aesthetically magnificent’.
Like a painter with his easel, he moved around according to the light, the framing, but above all his desires, in order to imprint on the film the revealing image, the one that mixes reality and thought. An adept of the other side of time, shunning the obvious shots and preferring elsewhere, he has managed to find the right distance here, the one that succeeds in capturing the image that speaks for itself.
Raymond Depardon is clearly an observer. He tirelessly explores the world around him without ever closing his eyes to reality. For over sixty years, he has criss-crossed the globe, seeking to get as close as possible to the heart of humanity. In the course of his wanderings, he has crossed landscapes and encountered shadows. Yesterday, at the foot of the thousand-year-old bridge, he went to meet the present, to experience space. Calm and serene, accompanied by his 20x25 camera, he took the time to photograph the light, the stones and the silence that surround the monumental Roman structure, deliberately taking only two or three shots from any one point of view.
At the end of the session, he approached, blue-eyed and with a smile on his face, declaring: ‘I enjoyed myself. I could spend six months photographing the place. But for the time being, Raymond Depardon's eye continues to search, determined to see elsewhere!
Raymond Depardon
Raymond Depardon, born in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 1942, is one of the leading figures in French photography and documentary film. From the 1960s onwards, as a photographer, filmmaker and journalist, he developed a humanist and committed body of work, marked by a deep concern for social, political and intimate realities.
A major mosaic exhibition on the Pont du Gard
This exhibition offers a sensitive and artistic exploration of the Pont du Gard through the eyes of artists, professionals, scientists and the personal reflections of regular visitors to the site. It brings together a variety of works (paintings, photographs, installations, videos) with the impressions, memories and visions of privileged witnesses, offering an immersive and participative experience: from classic French paintings of the 19th century to the luminous creations of the American artist James Turrell, from the expressionist paintings of Bernard Buffet to one of the oldest engravings of the monument by Jean Poldo d'Albénas dating from the middle of the 16th century, from the narrative paintings of the Gard native Gérard Lattier to the souvenir objects that bear witness to the advent of tourism.
The exhibition also showcases the work of the architects, botanists, landscape architects and archaeologists who transformed the Pont du Gard site in the early 2000s, as well as the way in which local residents and regular visitors have come to appreciate this emblematic site as part of their daily lives.
It's an invitation to reflect on how a historic monument can be perceived differently depending on the era, artistic sensibilities and personal experiences, while at the same time creating a living collective memory around an emblematic monument included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1985.
A symbol of our roots in a shared history!

General presentation
The studio where I live and work, nestled in the heart of the Nîmes Garrigue, is a constant source of inspiration. It is also a profound motivation to maintain my commitment to a respectful approach to life.
My artistic career began with an A3 baccalauréat in 1995 (Plastic Arts, Art History). My encounter with the artist José Pires in 2014, as well as my studies in art therapy informed by psychoanalysis, directed me towards the world of poetry. My work is based on the search for meaning, metaphor and emotion.
I organize two vernissages a year at the studio, for which I commit myself to producing new pieces for each edition.
Personal approach
To remain true to my commitment, I prefer to work as independently as possible. I make my own vegetable dyes, in particular indigo, for which I have been trained (indigo naturally produced in Provence). I also create certain papers from plants or rags, while others are salvaged, notably old papers.
I imagined and created sARTp (sac d'art papier), made from recycled paper bags. This approach consists in transforming logos or well-known brands to poeticize hyperconsumption, while at the same time offering small pieces derived from various studies.
I incorporate eco-responsible practices and techniques, using materials such as Linel gouache, natural pigments, oil paints (some handmade in Nîmes), artisanal ecological paints, walnut stain and many others. All my equipment is cleaned exclusively with Marseille soap.
In my desire to respect the environment, I use glues that are as natural as possible and avoid all chemical solvents. To take this immersive approach even further, I've started growing indigo plants.
You can meet me by appointment at my studio:

European Heritage Days 2024
The 41st European Heritage Days will be held on 21 and 22 September 2024, under the theme ‘Heritage of routes, networks and connections’.
This 41st edition of the European Heritage Days will focus on ‘Heritage of routes, networks and connections’, a central theme for a site like the Pont du Gard. A monument symbolising a technical structure, the Nîmes aqueduct was designed to transport water under pressure. Over the course of time, the Pont du Gard and later the Pont Pitot became a unique crossing point for the Gardon river, allowing people and goods to pass through.
Archaeological walk along the remains
Accompanied by a cultural mediator, you'll discover the exceptional remains of the Nîmes aqueduct on the left bank of the Gardon in the heart of the garrigue. You'll learn to spot the subtle traces left by the Font Ménestière bridge. As you walk along the arches of t
he Pont Roupt and Pont de Valive, you'll see how the designers of the aqueduct coped with the terrain and the fragility of the original construction. The highlight of your walk: crossing the Gardon at a height of fifty metres, at the top of the audacious Pont du Gard.

The surveyor and the aqueduct: hands-on: (recommended for children aged 9 and over)
Wondering how, 2,000 years ago, the designers of the Nîmes aqueduct ensured that the water collected in the Eure valley at the foot of Uzès would flow by gravity to the ancient city of Nîmes?
Go! Major works to bring the water here! Trace the aqueduct with the groma* and its right-angled sights. Then, set up horizontally, the chorobate* will reveal all its secrets for measuring the difference in level.
* The groma and the chorobate are two ancient scientific instruments.

The sweet onion of Vers Pont du Gard
The sweet onion of Vers is an onion that is unique to our region.
This slightly pink onion can be recognised by its weight of between 500g and 1.8kg and its slightly sweet taste. It was grown by our ancestors in the allotment gardens of our region. The seeds were passed down from farmer to farmer. Unfortunately, with the decline in these food gardens, production had disappeared in our village.
In 2010, the desire to revive onion production led to the creation of a farmers' association and a door-to-door campaign among families in Versailles and Argilliers, which bore fruit - or rather, its seeds! Since then, the association's aim has been to promote and encourage the revival of the Vers Pont du Gard sweet onion and, in particular, its production.
Thanks to the seeds that have been ‘found’ and with the support of the Chamber of Agriculture, the association has already been able to select and multiply seeds. Today, with the help of the ‘Largillière’ nursery and a handful of farmers, we can benefit from a fine production of environmentally-friendly onions of the highest quality.
The Vers Pont du Gard sweet onion association organises an annual festival of the Vers sweet onion so that as many people as possible can enjoy the product.
For its 2024 edition, and in view of the history of this onion, the Association and the Pont du Gard have joined forces to exhibit this local heritage during the European Heritage Days on 21 and 22 September at the Pont du Gard.
These days will be an opportunity to meet the producers and taste their products.
We look forward to seeing you there to share a moment of culinary history at the Pont du Gard!

13 September to 5 January 2025
‘Under the Pixels, the Matter’ invites four international artists to question the relationship between the real and the virtual, through works that blend nature and artifice. Régina Silveira, Ana Maria Tavares, Mona Kim and Nicolas Tourte propose works, including a series of new in-situ productions, that oscillate freely between physical and digital matter, stimulating new ways of seeing and conceiving the digital as an instrument of plastic creation: from video mapping to augmented reality, via photography, sculpture, video and multi-support installation.
Based on an idea by the artist residency l'ÉCHANGEUR22, and the LABIRINTO laboratory for the development of new curatorial and ethical technological practices, with the critical collaboration of Viviana Birolli, the PONT DU GARD presents a resolutely transgenerational and transcultural exhibition with several voices, promoting an ethical and artistic use of the digital.
The exhibition will be presented on the left bank of the Pont du Gard site in several locations, both indoors and outdoors: in the Pont du Gard exhibition rooms, but also in the surrounding area and on the bridge itself.
Practical info:
On the Left Bank, in the Temporary Exhibition room, in the Reception area and outside.

Patrick Siméon
He has had several lives... all dominated by passion.
Passion for bulls, first and foremost, which led him to come face to face with death in a confrontation with a wild animal that almost cost him his life.
Then there was his passion for art, a natural extension of his passion for bullfighting. Less physically risky but just as violent and sublime at the same time. Now a man and a bull, he is in a constant creative struggle with himself, combining instinct and drive.
A true autodidact, his approach is as experimental as it is thoughtful (unconsciously). His gaze is constantly nourished by what surrounds him, what he sees, hears, touches, loves and feels... to recreate it in an explosion of colours and a whirlwind of shapes, expressing all the strength and gentleness of his Being.
Mourir les papillons’ / A book about love, but not just that...
Gabriel is a fallen angel. Yet everything smiles on him. He has a magical life, without ever having asked for anything. His lucky star has taken care of everything for him. Always. His lucky star is Louise, whom he met when they were students from such different backgrounds. Young lovers, then newlyweds, then young parents. Quiet, bourgeois comfort. Now in his fifties, Gabriel is happy with this life. At a party, he shares an idea with an architect friend. It was an idea of genius, a revelation, a cultural and artistic revolution. Gabriel left for Paris. A new life, far from Louise, just for a while. But the angel is cut down in mid-air, struck by lightning, by madness. It was her. But before his downfall, his descent into hell, the angel Gabriel will discover love, true love, mad love, with all its magnificence and storms. To the very end, just for Her, just for Her... and the butterflies. The Other doesn't know all this. He never knows.
The works
The paintings presented here are done on paper left over from printing, on public notice boards, on paper picked up left and right on his walks, on old planks of wood. This principle of recovery is part of the support/surface artistic movement, which consists of reviving a medium destined for destruction as a work of art.

ASTEROIDS" EXHIBITION Rodrigue Glombard
from 29 June 2024 to 31 July 2024
"This installation is a look at our times. A time under tension in several respects. I deliberately chose stone from the Authentique quarry in Vers, the same stone that was once used to build the Pont du Gard aqueduct.
These suspended stones caught in this mesh of ropes symbolise the interconnection, interdependence and endangerment of our environment in the face of our actions, but also our fragility in the face of that same environment if it breaks loose. How long will it last?
And it's galvanising to create this installation in the very place where the artist Ousmane Sow was present in 2005. Rodrigue Glombard
"Asteroids" will be presented outdoors on the left bank.

“LES MERVEILLES DU VIVANT” Sound and light show by Groupe F
Every evening during the summer, from 29 June to 1 September, the Pont du Gard is transformed into a giant screen with a spectacular sound and light show, designed by artists from the famous group F. A moment of pure contemplation to share with family and friends.
The must-see evening event in summer is the Pont du Gard sound and light show. An enchanting and poetic interlude to round off your day at the Pont du Gard. The highest Roman bridge in the world is transformed into a 260-metre-long screen on which a succession of tableaux, each more beautiful than the last, bring to life a magical tale, an odyssey through time, thanks to videomapping.
This show invites spectators to (re)discover the marvels of life that inhabit the Gorges du Gardon through its characteristic flora and fauna. A soundtrack written by Scott Gibbons has been created especially for the show, using elements of the valley's biodiversity (fauna, flora, natural elements of the site).
It's a unique moment of reverie and contemplation that delights young and old in a friendly atmosphere. You can sit back and enjoy the beauty of the sunset, followed by a gradual illumination of the monument to recreate the cycles of the sun from dawn to dusk, and at 10.30pm, once daylight has completely faded, the famous 20-minute sound and light show.

Practical information :
- Viewing from the right bank
- The monument is gradually lit up as soon as night falls
- The show starts at 10.30pm and lasts 20 minutes (it is advisable to arrive 30 minutes beforehand).

EXPO: Common land for cultivation
The Pont du Gard is hosting an original exhibition by the artist Florian Monfrini. It will take place outdoors over two weekends in May, in the form of an itinerary alternating between pictorial works, installations and drawings...
On 11, 12, 18 and 19 May 2024, at the Mémoires de Garrigue site on the Pont du Gard, Montpellier-born painter Florian Monfrini will be presenting his latest works - paintings, drawings and sculptures - in an exhibition entitled "Étendue de terre commune à la culture.

Mémoires de Garrigue, located on the Pont du Gard, is a landscape that reflects centuries of human influence, from agriculture to pastoralism, that have shaped the Mediterranean terrain. The garden, designed by Véronique Mure, explores the rich history and lasting impression of this agro-sylvo-pastoral environment, highlighting its importance in understanding the changing relationship between humans and landscapes in the Mediterranean region.

This project, which is both an outdoor experience and an interpretive journey, is a living testimony to the region's complex history and its continuing relevance today.
"Driven by themes linked to the garden, agriculture, ecosystems and living together, my working process allows me to grasp and explore these themes, to flush with horizons, to trace the contours of a world, of a polyphonic choir where each element finds its voice." Florian Monfrini

The exhibition is open to visitors to the Pont du Gard.

Demonstrations in the building trades (wood, stone, iron) with the Maison des Compagnons in Nîmes
Historic monuments can offer a wide range of fulfilling and sought-after trades to those with a passion for them.
From raw materials, stone, iron and wood can be shaped by the craftsman into monumental, architectural, vernacular or sculptural works.
But to achieve the dexterity of his gesture and the pleasure of the work, the craftsman often trains young. He or she learns, observes, draws, works again and again... to inherit ancestral know-how and techniques that can be developed in line with contemporary digital techniques.
To mark the 40th European Heritage Days dedicated to "Living Heritage", the Pont du Gard site, in partnership with the Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France, is offering visitors the chance to meet apprentice journeymen at the foot of the Pont du Gard, a stone giant if ever there was one, and discover a living process of living heritage.

Thanks to the seeds that were "found" and with the support of the Chamber of Agriculture, the association has already been able to select and multiply seeds. Today, with the help of the "Largillière" nursery and a handful of farmers, we can enjoy a fine production of onions that respect the environment and are of the highest quality.
The Vers Pont du Gard sweet onion association organises an annual festival of the Vers sweet onion so that as many people as possible can enjoy the product.
For its 2023 edition, and in view of the history of this onion, the Association and the Pont du Gard have joined forces to exhibit this local heritage during the European Heritage Days on 16 and 17 September at the Pont du Gard.
These days will be an opportunity to meet the producers and taste the onion, but that's not all. There will also be a market of local producers, the opportunity to have lunch on the spot, culinary demonstrations by chefs, producers of products processed around the onion, honey, essential oils, and so on,
We look forward to seeing you there to share a moment of culinary history at the Pont du Gard!

"Light as Space" An exhibition by Yasuhiro Chida
At the invitation of the Pont du Gard, Échangeur 22 and the Département du Gard, the Japanese artist Yasuhiro Chida presents a multi-faceted exhibition where visitors are invited to discover spaces transformed by light.
"Light as Space"
When the transparent penetrates the tangible

Lyrical and contemplative, his art uses light and natural elements to question our awareness of space and the transformations of our bodily sensations. The fruit of complex protocols and simple gestures, his immersive installations, sometimes discreet and sometimes monumental, plunge spectators into unstable environments that challenge and rewrite their perceptual habits.
The loss of reference points helps to immerse visitors as close as possible to the works, stimulating sensations that are at once powerful, playful and meditative: an immersive experience for all the family.
Analemma - Afteral - Spectrum - Myrkviðr - Moving Silence: "Art as Space" brings together a number of key works by this internationally acclaimed Japanese artist, whose creations have for more than twenty years explored the many links between light, time and space - visible, invisible and tangible - in public spaces, the natural environment and museums.
The exhibition is produced by the Établissement public du Pont du Gard, in partnership with Échangeur 22 and the Département du Gard.
- Works: Yasuhiro CHIDA
- Assistants: Cassandre Lecocq, Daisuke Matsumoto, Hirohiko Koyamada, Motoi Ushiro, Olena Dereviankina, Yasuhiro Sumii

Exposition IAV (Intelligence Artificielle Vivante) de Jimmy RICHER
The Site du Pont du Gard welcomes the exhibition IAV (Intelligence Artificielle Vivante in french) by Jimmy Richer from October 1 to November 7, 2021, in partnership with the Department of Gard, the EPCC of the Pont du Gard, the Drac Occitanie, the Frac Occitanie-Montpellier, the Frac Franche-Comté, Échangeur 22 and the CACN (Centre d'art contemporain de Nîmes).
The IAV (Artificial Intelligence Living) exhibition is part of a large project: at the beginning, an artistic residence "Modus Vivendi", during 3 months, within the Voltaire school in Remoulins around different artistic actions involving students. The idea was to work on the current building of the Voltaire school, which is about to disappear, around an editorial project. Inventing stories to better inhabit the world and particularly to reconnect with our humanities during this period where we could add a crisis of sensitiveness to the sanitary one.
The exhibition will feature a series of large-scale drawings by Jimmy Richer, a performance by Chloé Viton on the opening day, a sound piece by Guilhem Causse as well as a selection of works from the Frac Occitanie-Montpellier and the Frac Franche-Comté.
Part of the exhibition will be created on site by the artist in the days preceding the opening of the exhibition, which will be an opportunity to present these unpublished and ephemeral works of Jimmy Richer. The main theme of the IAV exhibition is the questioning of ecology and the transformation of the world.
For Jimmy Richer, IAV (I A V for Living Artificial Intelligence) is also Yahweh, a small trivial god who has become universal, and it evokes something distant: there was. The very architecture of the A for artificial includes the I for intelligence and the V for living: after all, wouldn't every living intelligence be the result of an artifice? Every area of life that we know is the result of hundreds of thousands of years of geological, vegetal and animal transformations; from the air we breathe, to the fruits we eat, to the earth we walk on. Artifice is not the prerogative of the human species but of the living in all its diversity, its transformations and metamorphoses.
Presentation of Jimmy Richer :
"Halfway between a whimsical herald, an alchemist of the fragment and a dealer of the absurd, Jimmy Richer creates a deck of cards and redistributes them: syncretic and constructed by layers, his images achieve a moving synthesis between the registers of knowledge and the most different graphic and visual codes. The meticulous line of ancient engraving rubs shoulders with the clear line of the comic strip and the imaginary tattoo, baroque opulence blends with pop stylization, science and legend dare to be humorous. Along this walk in the history of the graphic image and of disclosure, the mediums are put into play, the engraving and the fresco come back in contemporary wall-painting, the marquetry in installation, for creations all the more conceptual that they are crafted.
For Jimmy Richer, the mediums are never finalities in themselves, but always channels to convey a content and to favor a reading at the same time more attentive and lighter of the art and of the reality: with him as with the Gadda analyzed by Calvino in his American Lessons, the world is a "méli-mélo, a micmac, a pelote" of which it is especially necessary not to attenuate the inextricable complexity. From the text "Anatomy of the Coquecigrue" by Viviana Birolli.
